FISH! TALES - BOOK REVEIW
Bill Adamson, cultural commentator and blogger of With Just a Hint of Mayhem reviews Fish! Tales: Real-Life Stories to Help you Transform Your Workplace and Your Life, by Stephen C Lundin, Harry Paul and John Christensen.

"I have also read some of the other books in the Fish series and I enjoyed all of them. If you are not keen on the self help genre don't be scared off - this is not part of that group. It is practical and inspirational and provides some tips, which frankly most of us probably already know but do need reminding of from time to time. This includes things like: it's you that chooses the mood you tackle the day with so why not make it a good and positive mood.

The series is based on the work activities of the workers at a fish market in Seattle. In simple terms they really did choose to take on the good mood and the positive attitude each day. This carried through into their work and then on into their personal lives.

Living in the 'Fish' way is a great way to be. I can heartily recommend the principles and the book!"

If you would like to find out more about how to transform your workplace and your life you can buy the book from Amazon. Alternatively, give me a call and you can borrow my copy!

GET MOVING
It’s time to break the block – and the only way to do this is to MOVE. Brainstorm, build something out of lego, go for a run (ok, a brisk walk will do), ring a friend, anything to break the paralysis. Then try following these essential steps:

As Mother Nature knows, it’s all about balance – avoiding the other extreme of cutting corners to save time, get to know yourself at your best and provide yourself with good conditions whenever possible – whether that’s an early start and a working brunch, long afternoons at your desk or evenly-distributed blocks of work time punctuated with breaks.

Next you need some momentum – put some energy into the project. Focus your mind with meditation or breathing exercises – then... play! A playful attitude guarantees you’ll be at your most relaxed and creative, so never forget to enjoy what you’re doing.

Be satisfied with your efforts – glitches are OK. You will never stop improving so learn when to stop and let go. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then try again, and try maybe one more time - then drop it and rest. Give yourself a pat on the back and a glass of wine – you did great!

PERFECTION PARALYSIS
If you’re stuck on a task - drafting and redrafting, trimming and refining, or, even worse, you’ve been incubating a killer idea for months but somehow you’ve still to put pen to paper, you’re suffering from Perfection Paralysis.

Afraid your work won’t be good enough, you’re simply not going to let it go – but missed deadlines and a string of postponements are not taking you or your business anywhere. And worst of all – it doesn’t work! Striving for improbable standards has been proven ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3815479.stm ) to add to a string of health problems such as depression, eating disorders and relationship trouble – not the ideal conditions for successful business!

WHAT'S STOPPING YOU?
What does doing a good job mean to you? Do you aim to maintain high standards, are you satisfied when you’ve given it your best – or must the fruits of your labour be nothing less than perfect?

High standards are essential in any business – but so is timing. By timing, I mean knowing when to complete one task and move on to the next, understanding when the time is right to let your creative efforts loose onto the world, come to a conclusion in that report or simply declare a job complete. Just like delegating, which I believe is at the heart of good business practice, it’s all about letting go of the need to control.

HELP!
The scary thing about delegating is spending the money but for me, as I’m going through a process of working closely with IT and marketing experts, I feel it’s time to practise what I preach – I’m always urging people to delegate their administration to me so it’s time I brought in some experts myself!

My IT strategist Lisa Jones from Barclay Jones is a big thinker, full of enthusiasm and great ideas and has a fab vision for developing my website using some cutting edge technology that’s ideal for virtual assistant work. So I’m happy I delegated the strategy side to people who can do it – after all, we can’t all be experts at everything, however much we’d like to, and nor do we physically have the time to give a growing business everything it needs – one person simply can’t do it. Admitting that has certainly been the first step to shifting my own perfection paralysis – it’s about bringing in the power of another brain. Keep visiting the blog to find out more about perfection paralysis.
